When spring first makes her appearance, the orchards still look quite barren and scarcely any leaves can be seen. To the eye, it doesn’t seem like there’s much going on; however, just wait a while, and the right amount of sun and rain will cause our fruit company’s plantations to spring to life.
In April and May the orchards are in full bloom. The blossoming of the orchards dusts the entire landscape in a clean, picturesque white. No good harvest is possible without each of those blossoms being properly pollinated. During spring, it's for just this reason that beehives are carefully placed throughout the plantations. Fruitsnacks is also always making an effort to protect and preserve the environment, which is why beneficial insects are used to chase away the harmful ones. It’s also why the company plants hedges and sows flower strips in the orchards: beneficial insects love them! We also like to make buzzards and kestrels feel welcome in the orchard by placing perches there. For Old World flycatchers and tits, there are nest boxes scattered amongst the trees, so that they feel completely at home. After all, they're part of the team keeping our orchard safe! Ladybirds are our favourite attack force when it comes to getting rid of crop-killing aphids.
By the end of the summer, the apples and pears are hanging lush and ripe on the trees. Harvest time is just around the corner and it’s time to get ready. Just like in the springtime, the plantations are awash in a sea of colour come autumn. It’s well worth a visit!
The harvest starts in September and ends in October. Our permanent staff and our seasonal workers are busy picking all the apples and pears for this two-month stretch. Straight after having been harvested, they're stored in large wooden, fruit crates that are then placed in our cold rooms. They’re stored here right up until it's time to deliver.
Fruit ready for consumption is sorted on a daily basis at Fruitsnacks. A computer-controlled sorting machine is responsible for getting this done. Want to know a fun fact? Our fruit refrigerators and our sorting machine are all powered by solar panels! Once sorted, the fruit makes its way to people hungry for fruit all over the world.
So that’s how it all happens! Now you know everything it takes for your apple to land in your basket gleaming with health.
